2nd CatchMod Technical Workshop - Integrating tools and toolboxes - (16-18 November 2004)

Linkage to other meetings.

This workshop has a number of connections to previous and following meetings.

Input from other meetings into this workshop.

Results of activities resulting from the 1st CatchMod technical workshops (Amsterdam, September 2003) will be reported and serve as input. The results of the Harmoni-CA forum (February 2004) and the workshop of the Pilot River Basins of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) Implementation (October 2004) will give relevant insights in the needs of specific groups of end-users. The meeting will also receive input from dedicated project meetings and overarching workshops such as the 'economics in water management workshop' that immediately precedes the 2nd CatchMod workshops.

A brief summary of advice to Harmoni-CA resulting from the 1st CatchMod technical workshops is given below :

In the different sessions of the workshop advice was given concerning issues Harmoni-CA could or should pursue to the benefit of catchment modelling.

  • Some project results (software toolboxes developed by the projects) can fit together providing a wider support to the implementation of WFD. Such fit cannot be achieved for free: it would require substantial resources, which are not planned in the existing projects. Nevertheless, some easy couplings can be tested as proof of principle to show the surplus value of integration of project results. Harmoni-CA should take the lead. Promote modular approach.
  • Harmoni-CA should organize meetings to harmonize toolboxes, e.g. through a CatchMod panel of experts.
  • Harmoni-CA should take a leading role in co-ordinating the efforts on uncertainty issues, maybe by establishing an uncertainty taskforce.
  • Harmoni-CA should promote the development of river basin networks for integrated catchment modelling
  • Harmoni-CA should search and distribute information on appropriate meta-data standards
  • Harmoni-CA should promote the development of an water-economics network
  • Harmoni-CA should put effort in the WFD terminology, such that it gets more adopted by the research community
  • Harmoni-CA should promote linkages to other clusters.
  • Harmoni-CA should take the lead for developing a Catchment modelling glossary.

Results of this workshop will be used as input into other meetings.

The results of the CatchMod technical workshop will feed into the 2nd Harmoni-CA forum (April 5-7, 2005), and the proposed 3rd CatchMod technical workshops (November 15-17, 2005). In contrast to the 2nd CatchMod technical workshop this workshop will focus particularly on the integration of methodologies.
