Work Package 4 : Joint use of monitoring and modelling

Partner and Description

PikLogo The big challenge for the European water and environmental managers these years is to implement the Water Framework Directive. For the time being the basic characterisation of water districts is an important task; in the years to come the work designing surveillance, control or operational monitoring programs will be another demanding problem to be solved, as the programs must be ready for stakeholder involvement in 2006 and operational in 2007. Catchment Modelling Guidance: Good practice in joint use of Monitoring and Modelling

Much can be gained in terms of knowledge, understanding and costs by combining monitoring and modelling. The objective of this guidance is to support joint monitoring and modelling, hence creating added value for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.

The overall aim of the docuemnt is to bridge the gap between monitoring and modelling and thereby create added value for the water authorities. Water managers are the target audience together with monitoring specialists who will get insight into the data issues of modellers, and can read how models can support their monitoring strategies. Modellers will find an overview on the demands for data collection in the WFD and straight forward guidelines on where and when they should offer their support.

The guidance can be seen at: http://www.wise-rtd.info/html_docs/MMGuidance_final.html

Synthesis report on Data Availability and Accessibility

Sufficient data availability and accessibility is a key factor for successful joint monitoring and modelling. The question if there are sufficient data for modelling is however not straightforward to answer, and the repeating discussions are frequently clouded by misunderstandings. Hence, this synthesis report aims to put the "Sufficient data availability and accessibility" into perspective.

The report present a survey and ends up with some recommendations. Researchers and data providers may use this report as a basis for reaching common understanding. Water managers and policy makers may find this report useful to initiate discussions to improve mutual understanding and solve data availability and accessibility problems.

The guidance can be seen at: http://www.wise-rtd.info/html_docs/DAA_report_final/DAA_report_final.html
