During the two previous workshops it was stressed that design or redesign of monitoring programmes is not a straight forward or easy task, and changes to the monitoring programme are thus likely to be done gradually in the years to come. To study this real-life case studies from three different regions of Europe were elaborated by the participants at this last workshop. The participants were presented to the 3 case studies and divided into 3 groups, each asked to apply the available knowledge and data (e.g. modelling results if any) to give answers specific question and to produce a flow chart on joint use of monitoring and modelling when carrying out the necessary data collection to meet the requirements of the WFD.
The three case studies were:
-
Cyprus:
Artificial recharge of tertiary cleaned wastewater. A smaller
confined river aquifer close to the coast has been identified to
be a test area for artificial recharge of tertiary cleaned
wastewater. The purpose is to increase the available groundwater
resources for irrigation (trees) and to prevent salt water
intrusion.
-
Italy:
Nitrate in groundwater in Campania. This region of Italy has a
large horticulture production and a high agricultural pressure.
It is a problem to distinguish between nitrate contamination
originating from waste water or from diffuse agricultural
sources
-
Denmark:
Forestation as groundwater protection and sustainable groundwater
abstraction.
The overall conclusion was that when managers and researchers are brought together and given rather free hands, they can easily work together in a very inspired and constructive way. Hence it is not a problem to consider monitoring and modelling jointly and to plan the use of these two disciplines in an effective and successful way. Besides, the three participants that brought real life case studies to the workshop agreed that they had some useful recommendations and considerations to bring back home.
The workshop was held in Osnabrück, Germany, in April 2006.
